I had my first bout when I was 14. I am now 45 and I have 4 kids, and I was a sperm donor in my 30s. I assumed I would have fertility problems, but I didn't. However, nearly all of my infections were on the right side. I either caught it before there was damage, or the left side did double duty.

In short, it depends on where (one or both sides), how often and how bad the infection is.
