These statistics are mostly the result of decades when cycling was far more primitive than it is today.
It's one thing to ride a gnarly off-road trail on a fully rigid steel frame with 1980's-era parts...and entirely another to ride a fully modern full-suspension mountain bike with disc brakes and a whole generation of bike/saddle design improvements. Remember also, as someone who I'm sure has come to learn about things like cadence, pedal stroke, saddle height/position, frame/stem/handlebar fit, etc....most people are totally ignorant of these things and ride very poorly fit bikes in rough conditions. I can't argue against the fact that overtaxing the body on a bike is bad for you. Too much groin pressure on even the best of saddles, on the best-fit of bikes, is bad for you. But with care, you can still profit from cycling inside the comfort envelope, I think. As I've mentioned in my previous posts, I stand up more....I use my stationary trainer at home more when my reproductive system is feeling particularly strained....I avoid rides longer than about 45min-1.5hrs, and even then only on the most comfortable of seats... But I refuse to be stopped from cycling. I have learned from my experiences with EP, that being defeatist and letting it dominate your life too much, actually holds me back from getting better. Your mileage (no pun intended) may vary, though.....EP cases certainly seem to differ substantially depending on cause, stage and duration....
