I returned to the urologist today after 3 months of antibiotics treatment and an ultrasound which suggested chronic epididymitis but no other serious ailments. So far I have only had modest improvements with period flare ups. The doctor advised one more month of meds and if that doesn't work we can try one final class of antibiotics.
I inquired about a microbiological workup such as semen culture and he said it would be negative anyway and he hasn't performed such a test in over 22 years of practice. He advised unprotected sex will not spread the infection. There seems to be a great deal of disagreement even in the medical community. Since I have period flare ups the dr says prostatis is also highly probable as diet can effect the condition, but epididymitis alone should be a more constant pain. He also explained there is no good test for prostatis. I was shocked when the urologist advised that chlamidia does not cause epididymitis. This urologist is not an advocate of surgically removing the epididymus but he said that may be a last consideration if all other treatments fail. I am not at all confident in his replies so I have a second opinion with the Director of Urology at the University of Pennsylvania scheduled late next month. This doctor specializes in pelvic pain. I am hoping for some better answers but my expectations are not too high. I am also considering a phone consultation with Dr Levine as this condition is not something I do not want to deal with forever. I will keep you posted. Thanks for continued pointers. |
